Richmond is a city in east central Indiana, United States, which borders Ohio. Richmond, Indiana has a population of 36,812. The area is sometimes called the “cradle of recorded jazz” because some early jazz records were made here at the studio of Gennett Records, a division of the Starr Piano Company. In 1806, the first European Americans, Quaker families from North Carolina, settled along the East Fork of the Whitewater River. John Smith and David Hoover were among the earliest settlers. Even now, Richmond is still home to several Quaker institutions. The settlement was incorporated as a town on Sept. 1, 1818.
